Research Scientist – Audio/Speech Analysis

Cogito is a 4-year-old software company developing a fundamentally new way of analyzing and understanding human communication and perception. We use advanced signal processing and computational engineering to draw out social signals exchanged in conversation. These signals describe distress, intent, and attitude and allow our enterprise clients to dramatically improve the value of their customer interactions. Cogito has an expanding top-tier client base in the healthcare sector, has an experienced technical and management team from MIT, is founder- and employee-owned, and is investing in growth.

Our company has recently been contracted for an expansive research program in our core technological areas, allowing us to expand our team. Cogito currently seeks a brilliant Research Scientist with world-class expertise in Audio Analysis and Statistical Machine Learning to join our research and development team.

The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of both the speech audio signal and models of human perception and a desire to discover new insights that link the two; has a solid foundation in systems and machine learning; has high standards of talent and intellectual creativity and is eager to work in an equally highly talented team to solve meaningful real-world problems in health care and other industries.

Role:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the perceptual and clinical outcomes of value to our clients and the associated human behavioral aspects that may be predictive.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate audio-based features and signal analysis methodologies to be predictive of various outcomes.
  • Implement and test high-quality software components for computing audio-based features in production.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct focused research and development on audio-based features.
  • With research colleagues, develop world-leading knowledge and technology around human social signaling and behavioral interpretation.
  • Factor and refine successful methodologies into reusable software. Interact and collaborate with engineering team to develop high-performance computational systems from research results.
  • Contribute to development of intellectual property, including writing patents.
  • Report and present research results to clients and community as necessary.
  • Keep abreast of and understand state-of-the-art technology and published research in machine learning, statistical analysis, audio/speech analysis, and social signal processing.
  • Interact and collaborate with operations, sales, and product development teams to understand client needs, value propositions, and to evaluate performance of algorithms in the field.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral or equivalent degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, psychology, cognitive science or other relevant field.
  • Substantial research experience and focus in audio analysis, AI, machine learning, and/or statistical analysis.
  • Deep experience in one or more particular audio analysis techniques plus broad experience with the landscape of audio modeling techniques.
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit. Desire to affect positive change in the world by applying experience in a practical setting with real-world data and outcomes.
  • Desire to work in a focused team environment.
